Ghost of a Chance

Filed under: Geek Stuff — britinla @ 4:36 am

My laptop had been running very slowly for several months. It would take an age to boot and there was excessive hard disk activity. I finally traced the problem to a very sick hard disk drive. A hard disk utility from this site showed the health of the drive at 1%. The drive was having to make multiple attempts at reads and writes; hence the slowness.

I bought a new disk drive and a USB enclosure. My original thought was to buy Norton Ghost, a piece of software for making images of a hard disk. The price was daunting for something that I would use but once. Thanks to Google, I found easeus.com, which offered the functionality I needed for free. I copied my laptop’s disk to the new unit, placed the new disk in the laptop, switched on and it booted quickly and indicated 100% health.
