Top Ten Who

Filed under: Geek Stuff — britinla @ 7:16 pm

The Daily Telegraph lists its ten favourite Doctor Who stories of all time. The list is fairly close to the one that I would draw-up. I would change but three of the stories: The Massacre of St Bartholomew’s Eve, Inferno, and the City of Death.

The first one no longer exists on film and I am young to have seen it on its broadcast, so I cannot include it. I would nominate Aztecs or Tomb of the Cybermen as a candidate from the black and white years.

I think that Spearhead of Space is a better Pertwee story than Inferno; lacking the feeling of padding that all three seven episode stories of Pertwee’s first season have and being shot on film and not tape gives it a richer visual quality.

City of Death is a funny story and there is real invention in both the story and the script, but I think that Robots of Death is better Who. It has a sense of menace combined with a well realized decadent civilization that has become too dependent on the eponymous machines.

It is telling that neither the Telegraph’s list nor mine has room for a Colin Baker story; a potentially fine Doctor let down by some dreadful scripts.
